My Lord:-
I have the honour to acknowledge receipt
of Your Lordship's Despatch No. 72 of March 24th en-
closing a memorandum relative to the use of the Brit-
ish dollar in China, and the possibility of its being
superseded by a specially coined Mexican trade dollar.
Your Lordship desires me to furnish an expression of
my views and to state what importance attaches in my
opinion to the continued use of the British dollar in
this country.
Before replying to Your Lordship's despatch
I thought it would be well to obtain information from
the Managers of the Hongkong and Shanghai Bank as to
the estimation in which the British dollar is held a-
mong the Chinese, and I have the honour to enclose
copies of (1) a reply received from Mr. D. H. Mackin-
The Marquess of Lansdowne,
